2018-2019 Hospital Parking Lot Violation Statistics – Fraser & Coastal Health
Three quarters of all hospital parking violation tickets go unpaid at Fraser Health.
[DELTA] Hospital stay, why pay? Evidence from the latest haul from freedom of information requests shows an overwhelming majority of parking tickets handed out at the two largest health authority regions go unpaid.Fraser and Coastal Health authorities serve half the population of British Columbia and account for 62% of all parking violation tickets handed out last year. It appears Surrey Memorial Hospital and Abbotsford Regional Hospital received the bulk of attention by the parking lot management company Impark. The number of violation tickets handed out at these two facilities was completely out of line with similar sized hospitals in similarly populated areas. The reason for this targeting is not immediately clear.
Some of the notable findings from the April 1, 2018 – March 31, 2019 period for all Fraser Health hospitals:
- 40,238 parking tickets were issued, only 10,395 tickets were paid. An incredible 74.2% non-compliance rate.
- Surrey Memorial and Abbotsford Regional accounted for 60% of all tickets issued while the remaining nine facilities, including the second largest hospital in BC, made up the balance.
- Not a single vehicle belonging to a patient or supporter was removed from a hospital parking facility.
- Based on the standard $80 ticket issued throughout Fraser Health facilities, it is estimated the private company took in roughly $832,000 in violation collections last year. Not a dime of this sum went to funding public healthcare.
Some of the notable findings from the April 1, 2018 – March 31, 2019 period for all Coastal Health hospitals:
- 10,991 parking tickets were issued, only 3,372 tickets were paid. This works out to a 69% non-compliance rate.
- Not a single vehicle belonging to a patient or supporter was removed from a hospital parking facility.
- Based on the standard $80 ticket issued throughout Coastal Health facilities, it is estimated the private company took in roughly $270,000 in violation collections last year. Not a dime of this sum went to funding public healthcare.
